Dissecting the text, I identified the power of human connection and how each character’s connection with the group, the land, the visitors, and the audience is the lifeblood of the play. The play itself is a celebration of the devotion to beliefs displayed by the men in the final moments of
innocence. There is no victimising or white guilt, but aboriginal people exercising agency. I’ve set a heated discussion in a room that exists to house them. My set design is a contemporary boardroom that abstracts the natural landscape in which the play is traditionally set.
- The table mimics the elevation of an escarpment.
- Ceiling fans act as wind and suggest heat.
- Frosted glass panels with vertical stripes are reminiscent of tree trunks.
