The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas
Medium
Watercolour
Author
Ursula K. Le Guin
The exterior landscape takes inspiration from small fishing villages in Italy, which often share the 'red roofs and painted walls' described. The decorative sparkling flags and streamers mark the celebration of the Festival of Summer and the joy of the people. Adults wear colourful summer garments to reflect their bright emotions, modest aprons and overalls reflecting their hard working, humble lifestyles. The children have their faces painted with floral designs and wear loose clothing that allows them to run freely, their "mud-stained feet and ankles" exposed. The attire of the townsfolk, much like the nature of the people, is joyous, sensible and freeing.
