The man-made pier is being decayed, being reclaimed by the natural world. The ocean has exposed the ugliness of the borough’s gossip, plaguing the pier with rust. The rust that plagues their world is reminiscent of blood, pointing to the lethal consequences of their culture, symbolising both the blood of the apprentices and Peter that is on the hands of society.
Trucks are pushed into new configurations by the chorus to create new locations. Whether they argue as they struggle or flirt with another character’s partner, these interactions characterise the minor figures to emphasise that the crowd is after all a collection of individuals- each at their exercise, whilst framing the moving of trucks as the boroughs trade. These scene changes enrich the story as opposed to halting it.
